Next stop: Encountering the Shitada-born scholar and his work on the Dai Kan-Wa JitenAbout this spot
This is the leading scenic spot of the Shitada district, where a sheer rock face towers beside the Ikarashi River (五十嵐川). Although it lies just where the plain gives way to the mountains, it is so high that looking up makes your neck ache, and children cannot help crying out. The rock surface shows a different face in each season, and in summer the contrast between the greenery and the colour of the stone is vivid. The river water flowing at your feet is clear, letting you feel how rich this land is in water. Confirming with your own eyes, before the afternoon water play, that this terrain is what gives birth to the water ties the story of the day together.
Tips
Some parts of the riverbank have unstable footing, so an adult must always accompany children when going down to the water's edge. There is little shade, so do not forget a hat and drinks. Parking spaces are limited, so use the designated spaces rather than parking on the road.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. The hours when the morning light strikes the rock face are the most impressive
