The Water Play Channel at Nakaura Himesayuri Forest Park is a free water-play spot in a forest park in the Shitada district of Sanjo City. A channel built to resemble ponds and small streams runs through it, and the city of Sanjo describes it officially as a place where, besides playing in the water, you can go in and catch insects. Because it is surrounded by trees there is plenty of shade, and being able to stay by the water comparatively long even in midsummer is welcome. The grounds have an adventure playground, so you can warm up on the equipment when your body gets cold and then return to the water. There are also a fishing pond, five bungalows and auto-camping sites, outdoor cooking facilities and an open-air stage, and the 3 km walking trail is just the right length for a forest walk. Use of the channel is free, while some facilities such as camping and the fishing pond are charged.

Tips

The water-play opening period has not been announced. The park operates from late April to early December and is closed every Thursday, opening when a Thursday falls on a public holiday. Be sure to check that your visit does not fall on a Thursday. Being in the mountains, temperatures drop in the evening, so a long-sleeved layer to put on after getting out of the water is reassuring. There are many insects, so bring repellent, and release the creatures you catch after observing them. The bottom of the channel is slippery, so have children wear sandals or water shoes that will not slip off. There may not be a changing room, so a towel or a simple poncho will save you trouble when changing.

Best time to visit

Arrive at 13:30 and you can play for about two and a half hours until the sun starts to sink in the evening
