The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which stands out even among the high-rises of Nishi-Shinjuku, has an observatory you can visit free of charge. The view from about 200 metres up is striking: the high-rises below, the streets of Shinjuku and Shibuya beyond, and on a clear day even distant mountain ranges. Places where you can enjoy a view from this height for free are limited even within Tokyo, so it is often used as the opening move of a trip with children. The lift is fast, and the sensation in your ears on the way up becomes a small experience in itself. Honcho Park is within walking distance.

本町公園親水施設（水遊び場）は、渋谷区の本町公園にある無料の水遊び場です。2026年の開設期間は7/1(水)から9/24(木)まで、時間は9:00〜17:00で、夕方まで開いているのが助かるところです。水深は浅く造られているので、歩きはじめの小さな子どもでも自分の足で歩き回れます。西新宿の高層ビル街から歩ける距離にありながら、周囲は落ち着いた住宅街で、地域の子どもたちが日常的に使う遊び場になっています。料金は無料なので、天気を見て思い立った日に出かけられるのも魅力です。同じ園内には遊具の広場もあり、水から上がったあとも遊びを切り替えられます。

Tips

清掃日にあたる毎週水曜日の午前は利用できません。また気象状況によって開設が変更になることがあるので、出発前に渋谷区の公式ページで状況を確認してください。飲食物の持込とペットの入水はできません。着替えの場所は限られるため、水着を下に着ていくと現地での支度が短く済みます。日陰が少ない時間帯があるので、休憩用の大きめのタオルと帽子を用意しておきましょう。

Tips

Check the observatory's opening days, hours and inspection closures in advance on the official Tokyo Metropolitan Government page. The lift entrance is on the first floor of Building No.1, and queues form at certain times. The window side gets crowded, so look for an uncrowded face first rather than lifting your child up straight away. There is a shop and a cafe inside.
