Said to have been founded in the Heian period, it is one of Nakano's leading old temples. A vermilion three-story pagoda stands within the grounds, and the contrast with the surrounding high-rise buildings creates a scene distinctly characteristic of Nakano-sakaue. A school was once located on the temple grounds, making it an essential place for understanding the area's history. With plenty of trees and shade, it is a comfortable place to start a walk on a summer morning. Its location, just a short walk from the subway station, is also a relief for families.
Tips
Since this is a place of worship, remind children not to run around the grounds. If a memorial service is being held, either observe quietly or shift the timing of your visit. Visiting is free. There are steps within the grounds, so if you have a stroller, check for a passable route at the entrance.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. A comfortable time is early in the morning, before the sunlight grows strong.
