About this spot

This crossroads meets Ome Kaido and has been known as a roadside landmark since the Edo period. A teahouse once stood on this corner, and the name Nabeyayokocho (Pot Shop Alley) is said to have taken hold from it. Today it is a street of shops centered around Shin-Nakano Station, where long-established shops mix with newer ones, keeping an unpretentious, everyday atmosphere. With deli shops and bakeries along the way, you can gather lunch here to eat at the park afterward. It is just steps from the subway station exit, making it a convenient starting point for an outing by train.

Tips

Closing days and hours vary by shop, so check ahead if there is a particular place you want to visit. Ome Kaido carries heavy traffic, so hold your child's hand when crossing. You'll be carrying your purchases around, so an ice pack or cooler bag is reassuring in summer. Bring a bag to take your trash home with you too.

Best time to visit

About 55 minutes. Buying before the lunch rush means shops are less crowded
