Former Shinohara Family Residence (旧篠原家住宅)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A merchant house built in the Meiji era that still stands near JR Utsunomiya Station. The imposing shop front finished in black plaster, standing alongside a storehouse built up from local Oya stone, is far more striking in person than in photos. The layout of a family that ran a soy sauce brewery and finance business remains just as it was, and the thick pillars and wide earthen-floored entryway convey the scale of the business at the time. Step inside and look up, and it's a space that draws a gasp from children and adults alike. Since it's a short walk from the station, it's a good first stop on a day you arrive by train.

Tips

Check the opening days, viewing hours, and whether it's open to visitors in advance on the City of Utsunomiya's official website. Some areas inside require you to remove your shoes, so footwear that's easy to slip on and off makes it easier to get around. Let children know beforehand not to touch the pillars or fittings.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. It's less crowded and easier to view right after opening in the morning
