Sano Tsunetami Memorial Museum (佐野常民記念館)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Standing along the Hayatsue River in Kawazoe, Saga City, this memorial museum honors Sano Tsunetami, founder of the Japanese Red Cross Society. Inside are exhibits on the Mietsu Naval Base, where the Saga Domain repaired and built ships in the late Edo period, presented in an easy-to-understand way that explains why this site was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With plenty of video and model displays, the exhibits are enjoyable to look at even for children too young for detailed history. Step outside and you'll find a lawn spreading over the ruins with a view of the river flowing into the Ariake Sea. The air-conditioned museum makes a perfect morning stop before the day heats up.

Tips

The museum is often closed on Mondays, so check the opening days before you visit. Parking is free, and it's about a 5-minute drive from the pool. The outdoor ruins plaza has little shade, so bring hats and drinks for the walk.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. It's easiest to view right after opening, when it's less crowded.
