Kozen-ji Temple (興禅寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A temple in Kuroi, Kasuga-cho, Tamba City, with an unusual layout surrounded by a moat and tall stone walls. It's said to be the site of the former lower residence of Kuroi Castle, and Lady Kasuga, known as the wet nurse of the third Tokugawa shogun, is believed to have spent her childhood here. The scene of white plaster walls reflected in the moat is quiet and photogenic, and stepping into the shade of the trees in the grounds brings a cool breeze down from the mountains. Behind the temple rises the mountain topped by the ruins of Kuroi Castle, letting you experience the atmosphere of Tamba's historic townscape in a short visit. It's a fitting stop for some quiet time before heading to the pool.

Tips

The grounds are free to explore, but since this is also a place of daily life, please walk quietly. Parking spaces are limited, so use a nearby public parking lot if it's crowded. It's about a 7-minute drive to the pool.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Mornings, with plenty of shade, are easiest for walking around.
