Daruma-ji Temple (達磨寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Located in Honmachi, Oji Town, this temple carries the legend of the meeting between Prince Shotoku and Daruma Daishi. On the grounds stands a stone statue of Yukimaru, said to have been Prince Shotoku's beloved dog, which also served as the model for Oji Town's mascot. For children, simply finding the dog statue and pressing their hands together in prayer is likely to make for a memorable stop. It's also known that there's an ancient burial mound beneath the main hall, so history is layered many times over within this compact temple ground. Though located within the town, a calm atmosphere flows through it, making it a good place to rest after walking Horyuji's spacious grounds.

Tips

There's no admission fee. The grounds aren't large, so you can go around in a short time. It's within walking distance of JR Oji Station, and there are restaurants in the area, so having lunch around here will make the afternoon's travel easier. Parking is limited, so if traveling by car, also consider parking lots near the station.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes needed. The shaded grounds are well suited for a rest before noon
