A gorge carved by the Hamanose River flowing through the west of Kobayashi City, where the former route of a forest railway has become a promenade. The highlight is a series of tunnels hand-dug through the rock; stepping inside, the outside heat feels like a distant memory in the sudden coolness. Clear water flows along the valley floor, and you can also spot potholes carved into the rock. The route isn't very long, so elementary-school-age children can walk the whole way without difficulty. Each time you emerge from the darkness of a tunnel into the light, it feels like a small adventure for kids.
Tips
Strolling is free. The tunnels have no lighting, so it's reassuring to bring a smartphone flashlight. Some sections underfoot are wet and slippery, so wear sturdy walking shoes rather than sandals. Access may be restricted when water levels rise, so avoid pushing through after rain. Parking is available near the entrance.
Best time to visit
Takes about 50 minutes. The stronger the sunshine outside, the more striking the coolness of the tunnels feels.
