Haniwa Garden (はにわ園)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A park spread across a hilltop in Miyazaki City, with a section called the Haniwa Garden (はにわ園). Statues of haniwa shaped like people, horses, and houses are scattered among the trees, and their forms floating in the dappled sunlight have a somewhat humorous look — children walk along peering at each one. A large tower stands atop the hill, opening onto a view over Miyazaki's cityscape below. With plenty of shade and a cool breeze passing through in the morning, it's perfect for a short walk. Admission is free, and being just a short walk from the parking lot is a welcome convenience at this time of day.

Tips

The paths through the Haniwa Garden have some ups and downs, continuing over gravel and dirt. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Since the pool opens at 10 o'clock, the key to timing this well is to limit your visit here to around 30 minutes. Mosquitoes appear during this season, so insect repellent will make it more comfortable.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. The morning shade is cool, just the right length for a light stroll before the pool.
