Next stop: Walk the streets of an old hot-spring town, then break for lunchAbout this spot
A single camphor tree in Kawatana, Toyoura-cho, Shimonoseki, designated as a national natural monument. Its low, wide-spreading branches make it look like a forest from a distance, which is how it came to be called the ‘Kusu no Mori’ (camphor forest). Estimated to be over a thousand years old, standing at its base and looking up is overwhelming when you consider how long this living thing has existed. The surrounding area is open grassland, and stepping into the tree's shade brings a cool rush of air. Connecting with something this land has long protected before heading to the pool adds depth to the memory of the day.
Tips
About a 10-minute drive from Yumegaoka Park. To protect the tree, there may be restricted areas near the trunk and roots, so please follow the posted signs. Shade is limited to under the tree, so bring a hat and something to drink. Parking space is limited.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. The slanting morning light shows off the shape of the branches beautifully.
