This is a castle with a compact, striking keep built atop a hill overlooking the town of Kamioka. It is now maintained as the Takahara Local History Museum, with the Mining Museum and an old farmhouse called the Former Matsuba Residence standing on the same grounds alongside the keep. Climbing to the keep offers a sweeping view of the Kamioka townscape, the Takahara River, and the mountains surrounding it on all sides, making it clear that this town opened up in a mountain valley. At the Mining Museum, you can learn about the town's history alongside the Kamioka Mine through actual tools and implements.
Tips
Check the opening period, hours, and admission fee in advance. The stairs to the keep are steep, so hold small children's hands as you climb. Footing can be unstable in some areas around the stone walls. There is a slope to walk from the parking lot to the entrance.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. In the clear morning air, the view of the townscape is especially crisp
