Next stop: A full afternoon of water play at the pool in this clear-river townAbout this spot
The Takatsu River (高津川), flowing through western Shimane Prefecture, is known as a river with no dam on its main stream, and its clarity is said to rank among the very best in Japan. Even in the Nichihara district, stepping down to the riverbank reveals water so transparent you can clearly make out the shape of every stone on the riverbed. In summer, simply standing by the water cools the air, and a pleasant river breeze blows through. The river is also famous for ayu (sweetfish), and anglers can be seen here in season. Seeing a genuinely clear stream before heading to the pool helps children appreciate just how water-rich this land is.
Tips
The riverbank and water's edge are free to visit, but stay away during high water or after rain. If you go into the river, choose a calm, shallow spot, and make sure a guardian always accompanies children. The stones can be slippery, so water shoes or sandals are reassuring to have.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. Even in direct sun, the riverside stays cool.
