About this spot

This dam in Fukutomi-cho, Higashihiroshima City, holds back water to form Lake Shakunage-ko, its surface spreading out among the mountains. The height when looking down from atop the dam wall is greater than you'd expect, and kids will likely want to lean over for a look. There are displays explaining how the dam works, giving you a chance to talk about where the water goes. Surrounded by greenery, the spot feels cool whenever a breeze passes through. It's just a short trip from Michi-no-Eki Kohan no Sato Fukutomi, so stopping by together makes for a natural flow.

Tips

Follow the on-site signage for where you can view the dam. Remind kids not to go beyond the fence or down to the water's edge. There's little shade, so it's more comfortable to keep the visit brief.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. A good length for a scenic break before heading to the pool.
