A temple on the slope of Mount Kugami, said to be the oldest in Echigo, near which stands Gogo-an, the hermitage where the poet-monk Ryokan spent twenty years. The approach is lined with cedar trees, keeping the air cool even in the height of summer. Gogo-an is a modest structure of only a few tatami mats, and the fact that someone spent so many years in such a tiny space leaves a quiet impression. From the temple grounds you can look out over the Echigo Plain, with a pleasant breeze passing through. For children, it will likely be remembered as the tiny house where a monk lived. Visiting is free.
Tips
Reaching Gogo-an involves stone steps and a mountain path, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Strollers are not suitable. There are mosquitoes in summer, so insect repellent helps. There's some distance between the parking lot and the approach, so allow plenty of time.
Best time to visit
Takes about 1 hour 5 minutes. The cedar-lined approach stays cool to walk even during the day.
