Tsubame City Bunsui Pool is an outdoor pool next to Bunsui Junior High School in Niigata Prefecture's Tsubame City, typically open from late July to late August. In addition to an 8-lane 50m pool, it has a toddler pool and a supplementary pool, catering to both kids who want to swim laps and those still getting used to the water. Best of all, admission is free. It's a pool rooted in the community, with local children cycling over all summer long. Swimming under the open sky of the Echigo Plain while gazing at the distant mountains offers a sense of openness you can't get at an indoor pool. It doesn't have flashy facilities, but that leaves more room to relax and unwind.

Tips

Opening hours run on a two-shift system: Tuesday through Friday from 13:00 to 17:00 and 18:00 to 20:30, and weekends, holidays, and August 13-15 from 9:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:30. Hours change significantly by day of the week, so be sure to check before you set out. Admission is free. Swim caps may be required in the 50m pool. There's no shop on-site, so bring your own drinks.
