About this spot

The largest burial mound cluster on the Osumi Peninsula, located in Higashikushira Town, with large and small mounds scattered across the farmland. The largest, Otsuka Kofun, is a keyhole-shaped mound with a shrine built on top, so you can feel the scale of the mound while paying your respects. Walking around, you can see the mounds lined up one after another, conveying the sense that a powerful clan once ruled this area. Because it hasn't been developed showily, the simple charm of the mounds blending into the rural landscape stands out. Admission is free, and it's a place where you can walk quietly and at your own pace.

Tips

Admission is free. The surrounding area is farmland, so remind children not to step into the fields. There's little shade, so bring a hat and something to drink. There are mosquitoes in summer, so insect repellent helps. Parking is limited, so follow the posted signs.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Walking in the cool of the morning is most comfortable
