Niomon Gate and Tengu no Komichi (仁王門と天狗の小径)
Flow of the course
About this spot
From the Niomon Gate (仁王門), the entrance to Saijoji Temple, a roughly 3km cedar-lined approach continues, known as the Tengu no Komichi (天狗の小径, Tengu's Path). Cedars hundreds of years old cover the sky, and in late autumn fallen leaves pile up underfoot, rustling with every step. A paved road and a hiking trail run side by side, so families with children can choose the easier path to walk. Even if you take the bus, you can still enjoy the tree-lined avenue from the window.
Tips
Walking the entire path takes about an hour for an adult. Adjust how far you walk by riding the bus partway up, according to your stamina.
Best time to visit
Morning hours, when the sunlight filters through the trees
