About this spot
A historic Soto Zen temple said to have been founded in 1394 (Oei 1), known as a temple of tengu legend. The best viewing season for autumn foliage typically runs from mid-November to early December. Maple trees color the area beneath the Ruri Gate (瑠璃門), in front of the main hall, and around the bell tower (鐘楼堂), and the stone-paved approach from the Kaizando Hall (開山堂) through the bell tower to the Kekkaimon Gate (結界門) becomes an especially beautiful path of autumn colors. There are many highlights to explore with children in an adventurous spirit, such as the large and small dedicated tengu geta sandals and the Okunoin (奥の院, inner sanctuary) at the top of a 345-step staircase. Admission is free. During the autumn foliage season, illumination from 17:00 has been held in past years (not yet announced for 2026).
