About this spot

A 13.8km driveway that climbs in one sweep from Odawara up to Daikanzan in Hakone. The autumn foliage is typically at its best from early to late November, and the exhilaration of driving through mountainsides ablaze with color is something only a drive can offer. From the Sky Lounge at the terminus, Daikanzan (elevation 1,011m), you can take in a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji and Sagami Bay beyond Lake Ashi. Operating hours are 5:30-22:30 (last entry 22:00; subject to change due to weather and other conditions).

Tips

Toll is 900 yen for regular cars (Hakone-Odawara Main Line), 200 yen for the Hakone-Izu connecting line, and 650 yen for motorcycles (over 125cc). During the autumn foliage season, the Daikanzan parking lot can get congested with traffic, so allow plenty of time. It gets cold at the summit, so don't forget a jacket.

Best time to visit

Afternoon, when the light is clear. On days with clear air, Mt. Fuji is visible in sharp detail.
