About this spot

A Rinzai Zen temple said to be the site of the ‘Tsubaki Palace’ (Camellia Palace), one of the three palaces — cherry, peach, and camellia — that Minamoto no Yoritomo established in Misaki. In 1199, after Yoritomo's death, it is said that the nun Myogoni, who had ties to him, converted the palace into a temple and spent over 30 years here. True to its name, it has long been cherished as a temple of camellias, and during the autumn coloring season, the trees on the grounds stand out beautifully against the port town's sky. Within walking distance of Misaki Port, it offers a quiet moment away from the bustle of sightseeing.
