About this spot
A grassy park in the mountains of Yugawara Town, where the park's ‘Satsuki no Sato (さつきの郷)’ is known as a famous spot with about 50,000 azalea bushes. From its hilltop location with a panoramic view of Sagami Bay, there are no large lights on the sea side after sunset, creating an environment well suited to stargazing. A sky full of stars overhead, a dark sea spreading out below, and the distant flicker of fishing boat lights - families can enjoy a night view that truly lives up to the name ‘Hoshigayama’ (Star Mountain). There is a parking lot.
Season & hours
Name: 星ヶ山公園
Venue: 足柄下郡湯河原町・星ヶ山公園
Tips
Temperatures on the mountain drop lower than on flat ground, so bring an extra layer of warm clothing. There's little lighting in the park at night, so it's reassuring to bring a flashlight and decide on your viewing spot while it's still light. Please check the official Yugawara Town tourism website beforehand for the latest information on nighttime access and parking.
Best time to visit
After sunset, from around 7pm once the sky is completely dark. Nights around the new moon, when there is little moonlight, are best.
