About this spot

A special nighttime service of the ropeway connecting Hakone-en to the summit of Mt. Komagatake (elevation 1,356m), offering a night tour to enjoy stargazing and the night view from the summit. It normally runs from mid-October to mid-January, on Saturdays and the middle day of three-day weekends, with multiple departures between 17:00 and 19:00 (2024-25 season record: October 12, 2024 to January 12, 2025). The fare, including the round-trip ropeway ride, is 1,800 yen for adults and 900 yen for elementary school students (2024-25 season record). The summit offers an open sky rising above Lake Ashi with little influence from city lights, and under good conditions you can take in both a sky full of stars and the night view across the Hakone area at once. Hakone-en has a parking lot.

Tips

The dates, times, and fares for the next season (fall 2026 onward) have not yet been announced, so be sure to check the official website for the latest information before making plans. Nights at the summit get as cold as midwinter, so warm clothing and gloves are essential. Stars are easier to see on nights around the new moon, when there is less moonlight. It is dark underfoot at the summit at night, so a small light will help you feel secure.
