Old Tōkaidō Hakone-juku Cedar Avenue (旧東海道 箱根宿の杉並木)
Flow of the course
About this spot
This is a cedar avenue of the old Tōkaidō road that remains between Moto-Hakone (元箱根) and Onshi Hakone Park (恩賜箱根公園). Cedars planted at the start of the Edo period have grown into towering trees, still conveying the atmosphere of the old highway. The grove is cool and quiet, and though it runs alongside the road, stepping in feels like entering another world. Simply walking here lets you feel like an Edo-period traveler — a free-to-enjoy highlight of Hakone.
Tips
The path through the avenue is unpaved. It can get muddy after rain, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Since it sits right next to the checkpoint and the park, you can walk straight on to connect the two.
Best time to visit
Morning, when sunlight filters through the trees
