Shiokawa Falls (塩川滝)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A waterfall in a valley in Aikawa Town, about 4 meters wide with a drop of about 15 meters, counted among the Ten Scenic Views of Aikawa. A paved path lets you reach close to the base of the falls relatively easily, and the area around the spray stays wrapped in cool, refreshing air. Even in September and October, when global warming keeps the heat lingering, this spot alone feels like another world of coolness. Long known as a waterfall believed to have miraculous power for rain-calling prayers, it is a historic site with a legend that the priest Ryoben of Todai-ji Temple in Nara enshrined the deity Seiryu Gongen here, and it also served as a training ground for Hasuge Shugendo practitioners. Viewing is free, and there is a parking lot.
