Jōsen-ji Temple (定泉寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A man-made cave connected to Jōsen-ji, a venerable old Shingon sect temple, formally known as Tayasan Yugadō. It is said to have been dug over successive generations as a place of ascetic practice from the Kamakura period through the Edo period, and its walls and ceiling are covered from end to end with carvings of Buddhist statues, mandalas, and animals. Walking through the cave with a candle received at the reception, you will find air that is cool and completely apart from the heat outside. Even in September and October, when warming temperatures keep the heat going, this place alone remains a quiet, cool haven. Viewing hours are 9:00 to 16:30 (last entry 16:00), open year-round (closed on days judged dangerous due to heavy rain, earthquakes, or other disasters). Admission is 400 yen for adults, 200 yen for junior and senior high school students, and 100 yen for elementary school students, with elementary school students admitted only when accompanied by a guardian.
