Heiwa no Torii, the Peace Torii Gate (平和の鳥居)
Flow of the course
About this spot
A vermillion torii gate standing in Lake Ashi, just past the approach path of Hakone Shrine. It was built in 1952 to commemorate the signing of the peace treaty and other events, and the plaque reading Heiwa, meaning Peace, is in the hand of former Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida. The view of Lake Ashi and the surrounding mountains through the torii gate, which stands right at the water's surface, is one of Hakone's iconic sights and a popular spot for commemorative photos.
Tips
A line often forms while waiting to take photos, so allow plenty of time. The lakeshore is a pleasant spot where the breeze passes through.
