About this spot

Representative Western-style houses of Yamate (山手), standing within and around Motomachi Park (元町公園), which is wrapped in trees. The Ehrismann Residence (エリスマン邸) is beautiful for the contrast between its white walls and the green trees, and you can view the garden's greenery from its indoor fireplace and sunroom. Across the road, the Yamate 234 Bankan (山手234番館) was built as an apartment building for foreign residents, and its exhibits let you feel what life was like at the time. Admission to both is free, and they are open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Take your time peeking into each room and savoring a quiet afternoon among the Western-style houses and gardens.

Tips

The Ehrismann Residence is closed on the second Wednesday of each month, and the Yamate 234 Bankan on the fourth Wednesday (or the following day if it falls on a holiday). Both are also closed over the New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3). There are set viewing areas where you can keep your shoes on and a designated route inside, so follow the staff's guidance.
