Sugimoto-dera (杉本寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

An ancient Tendai-sect temple said to be Kamakura's oldest, located along Kanazawa-kaido (金沢街道), the same road as Hokoku-ji (報国寺). Its moss-covered stone steps and thatched-roof Kannon Hall (観音堂) are striking, earning it the nickname 'Temple of Moss.' Visiting hours are 9:00-16:00, and admission is 300 yen for general visitors (high school students and up), 200 yen for junior high students, and 100 yen for elementary students. You can go up into the main hall to worship the Buddhist statues up close.

Tips

The mossy stone steps are closed to protect them; use the steps alongside them instead. Hokoku-ji (報国寺) is just a short walk away, so it works well to have lunch before moving on.
