About this spot

A Western-style house and garden tucked deep in a valley in Jomyoji (浄明寺). The garden has free admission and is open 10:00-16:00 from April to September and 10:00-15:00 from October to March (closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays; open on public holidays with the following weekday closed instead, and closed over the New Year holidays). Beyond the geometric rows of trimmed shrubs, the half-timbered Western-style house sits like a picture. The interior can only be entered during the open-house periods held twice a year, in spring and autumn. Even just sitting on a bench and taking in the garden and the house is a quiet experience worth the visit.

Tips

From October to March the garden closes at 15:00, so plan to arrive early in the afternoon. Watch out for the closed days (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) when planning your visit. To see the interior, check the dates of the spring and autumn open-house periods in advance.
