About this spot
An ancient Rinzai Zen temple ranked fifth among the Kamakura Five Mountains (鎌倉五山). Visiting hours are 9:00 to 16:30, with admission of 100 yen for adults and 50 yen for elementary school students (free for visitors with disabilities). A well-tended garden spreads out in front of the copper-roofed main hall, and at the tea house Kisen-an (喜泉庵) beside it, you can enjoy matcha while gazing at a dry-landscape (karesansui) garden (matcha with dry sweets 660 yen, matcha with fresh sweets 1,100 yen). Sitting on the veranda and gazing at the garden, you can lose track of time in the stillness of the raked sand patterns and rock arrangements. In autumn, the changing colors of the trees on the grounds are also a yearly delight.
