The home where Fukuzawa Yukichi (福澤諭吉), author of 'Encouragement of Learning' and founder of Keio University, spent his childhood and youth. A thatched-roof main house and a storehouse where Yukichi is said to have devoted himself to study remain, and their humble appearance conveys the atmosphere of his youth spent immersed in scholarship. The adjacent Fukuzawa Memorial Hall displays his personal calligraphy, correspondence, and related artifacts, allowing you to trace the path of how a child of a lower-ranking samurai in Nakatsu became a leading thinker of modern Japan. As a place where you can touch the origins of the person whose portrait graces the ten-thousand yen note, it's perfect for visiting and learning alongside children.

Tips

The former residence and Memorial Hall can be viewed together with a combined admission ticket. The outdoor former residence can have slippery footing on rainy days, so be careful. The exhibits in the Memorial Hall are substantial, so allocate more time to the Memorial Hall.
