Nakatsu: A Walking Tour of Nakatsu Castle, Fukuzawa Yukichi's Former Residence, and a Castle Town Famous for Fried Chicken
A complete street-walking course that lets you savor the castle town of Nakatsu, facing the Suo Channel in northern Oita Prefecture. Start in the morning at Nakatsu Castle (中津城), one of Japan's three great water castles built by Kuroda Kanbe, and take in views of the Suo Channel and castle town from the keep. After previewing the castle town's history at Nakatsu City History Museum "Nakahaku" (中津市歴史博物館) nestled against the stone walls, enjoy lunch at Moriyama Manda Honten (もり山万田本店), a celebrated restaurant in Nakatsu, the mecca of fried chicken, where you'll relish freshly-fried garlic soy sauce fried chicken. In the afternoon, visit the former residence and memorial hall of Fukuzawa Yukichi (福澤諭吉), whose face appears on the ten-thousand yen note, where he spent his youth, and finish by strolling through the temple district starting from Gōgen-ji Temple (合元寺) with its famous red wall said to turn red no matter how many times it is repainted.
