About 25 minutes from Fukushima Station via the Fukushima Kōtsū Iizaka Line, nicknamed 'Ii-den.' The terminal Iizaka Onsen Station is an impressive station building with a large semicircular window facing the Suriagami River. The moment you step out, you are enveloped in the atmosphere of a hot spring town. Iizaka Onsen is an ancient hot spring that the poet Matsuo Bashō is said to have visited during his journey for 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North,' and a statue of Bashō stands in front of the station, making it a popular photo spot. The Suriagami River flows directly in front of the station, and the view of inns and hotels lining the riverbank perfectly captures the entrance to a hot spring district. Tourist information offices and maps are available in and around the station, so it's recommended to get a map of the hot spring town here, confirm the locations of shared bathhouses and foot baths, and then set off on your walk.
Tips
About 25 minutes from Fukushima Station on the Iizaka Line; get off at the terminal. Trains run regularly throughout the day, but it's reassuring to check the return schedule in advance. By car, there are paid and free parking lots scattered throughout the hot spring district. It's easy not to get lost if you pick up a hot spring town map from the station information desk before starting your walk.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes. Arriving early in the morning when the hot spring town is quiet allows you to take photos of the station building and Bashō statue leisurely.
