Saiki: A Day Walking Along Bungo Futami-ga-ura and Saiki Castle Ruins - Sea and Castle Town
A course to experience both the morning seascapes and a leisurely castle town walk in a single day in Saiki, a seaside town in southern Oita Prefecture. The journey begins at Bungo Futami-ga-ura (豊後二見ヶ浦), a celebrated spot on the Nippon-Kai coast. The husband-and-wife rocks connected by a 65-meter-long great sacred rope stand majestically in the sea, bathed in morning light. Next, follow the "Doppo's Path" from the foot of Castle Mountain to Saiki Castle Ruins. Standing atop the stone walls at the summit reveals the castle town and Saiki Bay spread below your feet. For lunch, enjoy a meal worthy of a seaside town at Michi-no-Eki Yayoi on the banks of the Banjo River. In the afternoon, visit the Kunikidata Doppo Museum, where the literary master once lived, and the Saiki City Historical Museum, which conveys the history of the Mori clan's 20,000-stone castle town, then leisurely walk through the remaining castle town where the San-no-Maru Yagura Gate still stands. A full day packed with the charm of Saiki—its sea, mountains, and literary heritage.
