Nanjo: Sacred Saitani Utaki and Okinawa World - A Journey Through Ryukyuan Holy Sites and Limestone Caves
A full-day course in Nanjo City in the southern part of Okinawa's main island, where you'll experience the origins of Ryukyuan prayer and the mysteries of nature. In the morning, visit Saitani Utaki (斎場御嶽), the highest sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Beyond the approach path enveloped in subtropical forest, past the triangular space formed by massive boulders, you'll see Takara Island (久高島), the Island of Gods. Next, take in a panoramic 270-degree ocean view at Chinen Misaki Park jutting into the Pacific, then enjoy a scenic drive across the Nirai-Kanai Bridge descending toward the sea. For lunch, cross to Okubu Island and enjoy freshly fried Okinawan tempura at Nakamoto Fresh Fish Tempura Shop. In the afternoon, explore the approximately 5 km Gyokusendo Cave (玉泉洞) and the red-tile Ryukyuan streets at Okinawa World, concluding with the powerful Super Eisa performance with resounding taiko drums. Experience the serene side and the vibrant side of Okinawa in a single day.
