Worship at the Tengu's World-Record-Tall Wooden Geta and Cedar-Lined Approach
About this spot
An ancient Soto Zen temple founded over 600 years ago. Legend tells that the guardian deity Doryo Doji became a tengu to protect the temple, and iron geta (wooden sandals) with wishes hang throughout the grounds. The world-record-large wooden geta is a must for commemorative photos. The cedar-lined approach with trees over 500 years old creates a sacred atmosphere that purifies the heart simply by walking through it.
Tips
You can drive up to a parking lot near the main hall, making it safe for families with small children. There are many stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes. The 350 stone steps to the inner shrine (Okuno-in) require consideration of stamina.
Best time to visit
Allow 1 hour; late afternoon has fewer visitors and a quieter cedar-lined approach
