Climb Japan's first Western-style lighthouse for panoramic views of Tokyo Bay
About this spot
Successor to Japan's first Western-style lighthouse built in the Meiji period, this is one of the few 'climbable lighthouses' in the country. From the observation platform reached by a spiral staircase, Tokyo Bay spreads out all around you, with views of passing large ships and the Boso Peninsula across the water. Standing at the birthplace of Japan's lighthouses, families can experience firsthand the work of protecting maritime safety.
Tips
Entry: ¥300 for junior high students and up; free for elementary school children and younger. The spiral staircase is steep, so hold hands with small children. Entry may be suspended on windy days.
Best time to visit
Allow 30 minutes; it's less crowded in the morning, and the sea view from the observation platform is beautifully blue
