About this spot

This steaming volcanic area was formed by an eruption of the Hakone volcano about 3,000 years ago. The billowing white smoke and the smell of sulfur give it the powerful feel of another planet. The local specialty is the kuro-tamago, boiled eggs whose shells turn jet black from the power of the hot springs. According to legend, eating one adds seven years to your life, a fun topic to get the whole family excited about.

Tips

At over 1,000 meters elevation, it can feel chilly even in midsummer, so bring something to layer on. There are restaurants near the station where you can also have lunch. Just be sure to check on the day, since the area open to visitors can change depending on volcanic gas conditions.

Best time to visit

About 1.5 to 2 hours; arriving before noon lets you get into the restaurants before they get crowded.
