Uma-no-Seno Arch Cave (馬の背洞門)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A sea cave about 8 meters high, carved out over countless years by waves and wind, representing one of Jōgashima Island's most scenic spots. The arch, viewed from below as you descend the walkway, is breathtakingly dramatic and will elicit delighted shouts from children. The tide pools around the cave are home to small crabs and shells, making it perfect for a first experience exploring intertidal zones.

Tips

Reaching the cave involves stairs and rocky terrain, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. A baby carrier is safer than a stroller. The top of the arch is off-limits due to collapse risk.

Best time to visit

Allow 45 minutes; low tide is best for tide pool exploration
