Time-Travel to the Edo Period at the Thatched-Roof Honjin Inn

About this spot

A precious honjin (official inn) structure remaining in Obara-juku, a post station on the Kofu Highway, said to be the only honjin still standing in Kanagawa Prefecture. Visitors can freely tour the impressive thatched-roof building and the upper chamber where daimyo (feudal lords) stayed. The tatami rooms and steep wooden stairs offer children a sense of small exploration, creating an atmosphere distinctly different from the amusement park.

Tips

Tours are free and take about 30 minutes. Closed Mondays, so confirm operating hours before your visit. Since you remove your shoes inside, wear slip-on footwear for ease for both parents and children.

Best time to visit

Allow 30 minutes; early afternoon has fewer visitors and allows for leisurely viewing
