A stone-step pilgrimage path to the colossal carved cliff Buddha and Hyakushaku Kannon
About this spot
An ancient temple with approximately 1,300 years of history, with the entire south-facing slope of Mt. Nokogiri forming its vast grounds. The carved cliff Buddha, standing 31 meters tall, is among Japan's largest stone-carved Buddhas, and throughout the grounds you'll find various attractions including the Hyakushaku Kannon carved into the rock wall and the Sengohyaku Rakan stone Buddha statues. The pilgrimage path with its ups and downs of stone steps feels like a light mountaineering adventure.
Tips
The grounds are mostly stone steps, so strollers are not practical; for small children, a baby carrier and comfortable walking shoes are reassuring. From the ropeway summit station, the west gate administrative office is nearest, and keep your admission ticket as you'll need it for re-entry.
Best time to visit
About 70 minutes to visit the main Buddha plaza. Morning hours are cooler and easier for walking.
