Follow the Nakase Hiking Trail to reach the spectacular river diversion tunnel ruins

About this spot

A wondrous landscape where rock was tunneled during Meiji-era land reclamation for river diversion, only for the ceiling to later collapse and create dramatic cliff faces. Walking along the Nakase Hiking Trail beside the Yoro River and crossing via stepping stones to reach this site feels like an adventure—a highlight of the valley hike.

Tips

After heavy rains, stepping stones may be impassable due to high water, so use caution. Non-slip shoes and a backpack leaving both hands free are recommended.

Best time to visit

Plan about 1 hour for the round-trip hike. Particularly stunning during new growth and autumn foliage seasons
