About this spot

During the Meiji era, a tunnel was carved through the bedrock for a river diversion (kawamawashi) to open up farmland; later the ceiling collapsed, leaving behind this strange landscape of sheer cliff walls. Walking the Nakase Trail along the Yoro River and crossing the river on stepping stones to get there feels like an adventure in itself, making it the highlight of the valley walk.

Tips

When the water level rises, the stepping stones can become impassable, so take extra care after rain. Non-slip shoes and a backpack that leaves both hands free are recommended.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour including the round trip on the trail. The fresh green leaves in spring and the autumn foliage are especially beautiful.
