Morning Stroll Through Iwatatatami, a Designated National Scenic Spot & Natural Monument

About this spot

A symbol of Nagatoro carved by the Arakawa River's flow. Vast rock terrain resembling laid tatami mats extends for approximately 500 meters, with a dramatic red cliff called Akakabe towering on the opposite bank. Walk across the rocks and experience the ravine beauty up close—a nationally designated scenic spot and natural monument.

Tips

The rock surface is uneven, so it's safest to leave strollers at the shopping street and use a carrier. Wear non-slip shoes and hold children's hands near the riverbank.

Best time to visit

Stroll takes 40–60 minutes. Early morning has fewer crowds and is easier to walk
