Climb Maruhaka-yama Kofun and Experience the Scale of Ancient Times
About this spot
A nationally designated Special Historic Site where nine large burial mounds are scattered across a grassy plaza. Maruhaka-yama Kofun, Japan's largest circular burial mound, can be climbed to its summit. It is also known as the location where Ishida Mitsunari set up his command post during the water siege of Oshi Castle. Spotting the Gozankai Yagura of Oshi Castle from the summit is a uniquely Gyōda experience.
Tips
The stairs on Maruhaka-yama are surprisingly steep, so hold children's hands. The park is vast with little shade, so don't forget a hat and drinks. Inari-yama Kofun is also climbable with detailed explanatory signage.
Best time to visit
Allow 60–90 minutes. The grassy plaza remains relatively spacious even on weekends.
