About this spot
A collective burial ground from the Kofun period with 219 horizontal caves honeycomb-like along a rocky slope. A nationally designated historic site where you can actually climb the designated hill and view the caves up close, giving children the thrill of being an explorer. The site also features a cave with naturally occurring Hikari Goke (luminous moss)—a natural monument—and remnants of a wartime underground military factory, captivating adults as well.
Tips
Since you'll climb sloped stairs, it's safer to leave your stroller near the entrance and use a carrier. Take time to adjust your eyes before peering into the Hikari Goke cave.
Best time to visit
Plan for 45 minutes to 1 hour. The afternoon is relatively less crowded
