About this spot
A two-story, three-level wooden villa within Kairakuen, said to have been designed by Tokugawa Nariaki himself. This is where the daimyo hosted gatherings of literary figures and poets. From the top floor, 'Rakujuro,' you can overlook both Senba Lake and Kairakuen. The fusuma paintings depicting seasonal flowers are beautiful, and it's enjoyable to explore the differences from room to room.
Tips
The interior stairs are steep, so hold the hands of small children. Since you remove your shoes at the entrance, wearing easy-to-slip-on shoes makes it convenient for grandparents as well.
Best time to visit
Allow 30–40 minutes. Mornings offer relatively leisurely viewing.
