Stroll through one of Japan's three most celebrated gardens in the crisp morning air
About this spot
One of Japan's three most celebrated gardens, alongside Kenrokuen in Kanazawa and Korakuen in Okayama. This garden was opened by Tokugawa Nariaki with the wish to 'enjoy alongside the people.' It is famous for its plum grove of approximately 3,000 trees representing about 100 varieties. Beyond plum season, there are many attractions including bamboo groves and cedar forests, and the spacious lawn is perfect for children to rest.
Tips
The garden paths are mostly gravel, which can be challenging with strollers. Entering from the East Gate provides easy access to the plum grove and Kōbuntei, making it walkable for three generations. Arriving early during plum blossom season is most comfortable.
Best time to visit
Allow 60–90 minutes. The morning hours right after opening are uncrowded and comfortable.
