Pay family respects at the brilliantly colored shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu
About this spot
A shrine established by Yorifusa, the first daimyo of Mito, to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu. Located on a high ground just beside a shopping street, it features eye-catching shrine buildings in vibrant colors. The grounds also display rare items such as the 'Anshinsha' (chariot) conceived by Nariaki. Being situated in the heart of the town makes it easy to stop by while strolling through the castle town.
Tips
Omamori (commemorative stamps) can be obtained at the shrine office. Stone steps line the approach, so take your time with grandparents. Exploring the nearby shopping street for Mito natto souvenirs is also enjoyable.
Best time to visit
Allow 20–30 minutes. You can enjoy unhurried worship even late afternoon.
